OurSpace World Inc

Founded in 2011 as a community healing space,  OurSpace World supports groups of folks who believe cooperation is essential to liberation. Since 2018, OSW and its current 27members have helped almost 30 Black farmers in 5 states and contributed to the stewardship of almost 40 land bases in their community food sovereignty efforts. To ensure this work continues for generations, OSW creates educational opportunities for Black youth, families, and young adults.  

Today, we need your support. As USDA funding cuts have impacted many of us, we cannot allow it to prevent us from providing services to our farmers and land stewards!

Our Work 

Our work has grown through several core initiatives. The Ujima Initiative was designed to cultivate collaborative strength within our local Black healthy-food ecosystem by bringing community members on local farms to support day-long projects, planting and harvest. The Calabash Network supports and funnels resources to groups working toward sustainable food sovereignty and strengthens our local Black growers through technical assistance and support. Project Teach 22 uses outdoor education to prepare youth to become 22nd-century-ready land stewards through engaging hands-on, outdoor, and on-farm education. 

Black Food Black Futures (BFBF) began as a festival, led by 10 high school and college interns to celebrate the resilience of Black food culture with 40+ Black chefs, farmers, and food activists showcased and 750lbs of non-perishables donated over two days of events and workshops. BFBF framework to build our work in the community and launch The Black Food Truck, a mobile farmer’s market, is committed to food justice, supporting local agriculture, and growing connections. The BFT has participated in over a dozen events throughout the Maryland, DC, & Virginia area since its spring launch.

Our impact includes:

• over 20,000 pounds of produce grown and distributed in Prince George's County, MD
• over $1.1 million dollars funneled to food sovereignty work across the country
• over 150 youth reached through field days / field trips, summer camps, internships, and more
