Building Homes for All!!
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
Margaret Mead
This is a critical time – in our nation, and in the lives of families, children, and individuals.
Our goal for the 8/28 fundraiser is $20,200; and we’re asking you to contribute to our first affordable housing unit - for that first family, in this brand-new community. No gift is too small; no gift is too big – from $2 to $20 to $202 to $2020 to $20,200.
As many of us know, rising housing costs are creating an unfair burden of housing insecurity across all of Metro Atlanta.
But did you know that these housing inequities are an even greater burden for residents in the cities of South Fulton (East Point, College Park, Hapeville, The City of South Fulton, Union City, Fairburn, and Palmetto).
- Nearly half (46.5%) of residents in the South Fulton region spend more than 30% of their monthly income on rent and utilities (many of them spending as high as 50%-75%);
- A similar number (42.2%) of South Fulton households are financially unstable; and
- Over 14% (14.3%) of South Fulton residents were unemployed in the past year.
- Most estimates show South Fulton’s regional shortage of affordable housing to be in the range of 12,000-16,000 units – which includes both single-family and multi-family homes;
And these are pre-COVID pandemic figures. While incomes have gone down – drastically – unemployment, financial, and housing insecurity have multiplied. And if this weren’t enough, current pandemic policies which put a temporary hold on evictions are set to end soon – unleashing a tsunami of evictions of individuals and families with children.
Clearly, the need has gone from huge, to what some would say is “overwhelming”. But at Zion Hill CDC, our aim remains high. We want to make a huge dent in that 16,000 affordable housing shortfall. Our first housing development project aims to build 100 affordable units, with market-rate quality, amenities, finishes, and fixtures. We aim for this mixed-income community to be 100% affordable, with access to the resources and services that families need to stabilize their households – making this a real added-value to the neighborhood, and a ‘Beloved Community’.
We know that we need your help to make this happen. Every little (and big) bit helps. Partner with us: for the long-haul; and for the good of all.
