Approaching 25 Years of Transforming Lives and Communities Through Hip-Hop

For nearly 25 years, Words Beats & Life has used hip-hop culture in all its forms to educate, employ, inspire, and connect people and communities.

Since our founding in 2002, WBL has grown from a local idea into a community development organization with programs, partnerships, publications, public art, festivals, and cultural exchanges reaching across the Washington metropolitan region and around the world.

As we approach our 25th anniversary, we are celebrating what our community has built while preparing for what comes next. Our work is not finished. We want to reach more communities, create more opportunities for artists, and ensure that future generations can use hip-hop to learn, lead, create, and make meaningful change.

Achieving those goals requires a long-term financial sustainability strategy that supports our programmatic vision. The Words Beats & Life Endowment is an essential part of that strategy. It honors everything WBL has accomplished while creating a permanent source of support for everything we have yet to achieve.

Nearly 25 Years of Impact

As we approach this milestone, WBL continues to advance five organizational priorities:

1. Arts Education: WBL provides accessible, high-quality learning experiences in emceeing, DJing, poetry, graffiti and street art, dance, beat production, podcasting, photography, fashion, and other creative disciplines. Through schools, libraries, community spaces, and the WBL Academy, participants gain artistic skills, confidence, discipline, and opportunities to share their work.
2. Creative Employment: WBL challenges the myth of the “starving artist” by treating creative work as valuable labor. We pay teaching artists, performers, designers, producers, writers, and other creative professionals while helping emerging artists develop skills, professional experience, and pathways into sustainable careers.
3. Cultural Diplomacy: WBL has shared hip-hop culture across 11 countries, using art and cultural exchange to build relationships among people from different backgrounds. These experiences demonstrate hip-hop’s power as a global language for learning, collaboration, and understanding.
4. Centering Marginalized Voices: Through publications, poetry programs, radio, podcasts, murals, exhibitions, performances, and public events, WBL creates platforms for people and communities whose experiences are too often overlooked. We help participants tell their own stories and contribute their ideas to the public record.
5. For the Culture: WBL produces festivals, concerts, community celebrations, workshops, and cultural experiences that honor hip-hop’s history while investing in its future. Our work creates space for artists, families, students, and neighbors to experience culture together and strengthen their connections to one another.

A Look Forward: 2040 Vision

By 2040, Words Beats & Life will be approaching four decades of service, creativity, and community investment.

Our vision is for hip-hop to continue evolving as an outcome-driven, design-centered cultural practice rooted in communities around the world. We believe it can help people imagine solutions, create economic opportunity, strengthen relationships, and advance justice and equality.

WBL remains committed to expanding arts education, creating dignified employment for artists, strengthening global connections, preserving culture, and ensuring that marginalized voices are heard and valued.
