The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH) is one of the largest Brooklyn-based, Black-led, and Black-benefiting nonprofits in New York City. As a team, we are advancing equitable access to nutritious food for Black communities and communities of color that disproportionately suffer from food insecurity. Our work impacts New Yorkers across the city. Still, most individuals we serve reside in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy), Brownsville, Ocean Hill, and East New York neighborhoods, which are predominantly Black communities.

A lack of food access and racial inequality go hand in hand. For over 25 years, we have worked tirelessly to strip away the shame of hunger and replace it with dignity-driven and people-centered approaches for under-served and marginalized communities.  The COVID-19 pandemic and its lasting effects have exacerbated the plight of Black communities that are historically hardest hit by hunger and poverty. This is not surprising because Black communities and communities of color are likely to face economic deprivation at disproportionate rates, especially during times of crisis. Since March of 2020, we have mobilized to meet Black communities' needs so that our neighbors do not go to bed hungry.

In partnership with our supporters, volunteers, donors, and other community-based organizations, we have:

  • Served over 1.4 million individuals compared to upwards of 300,000 a year before the pandemic
  • Provided enough food for over 35 million nutritious meals compared to 3 million meals a year
  • Established 200 new community partnerships in Brooklyn and Queens
  • Moved into a temporary 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse that serves as a food hub in Brooklyn
  • Served upwards of 14,000 families a week
  • Served over 2,000 kids in public schools who face food insecurity on the weekends when they do not have access to school food
  • Expanded our urban farms to include a 9,000 sq. ft. farm in East New York
  • Opened Beach Dunes Eats and Arts, a café and culinary arts training center in Arverne, Far Rockaway
  • Added two additional 17-ft. vehicles to the Fresh Vibes Mobile Market fleet
  • Continued to run our Benefits Access office, urban farms, youth workforce programs, and many other vital services and programs

None of this would be possible without the willingness to serve, the generous gifts, and the shared, marketable talents of people like you. TCAH is uniquely capable of recognizing our community's needs, dreaming up ways to solve problems, and executing sustainable solutions. However prudent, efficient, and mission-minded, our staff cannot plan for expansion without our supporters' financial giving. It's on us to build up our communities, and we would be grateful to have you join us in our fight for food and racial justice in New York City.

Please consider donating to our work through the Give 8/28 campaign on Friday, August 28th, 2023!
