Smalltimore Homes is a Baltimore-based community development nonprofit working to eradicate homelessness by eliminating housing barriers through education and collaborative partnerships.

We believe everyone deserves a healthy place to live—and that communities most affected by housing inequity should have a meaningful role in designing the solutions.

Our work sits at the intersection of housing, public health, community development, education, economic opportunity, technology, and resident leadership.

We build and demonstrate innovative housing solutions, activate vacant spaces, connect residents to resources, convene community partners, and create opportunities for Baltimore residents to help shape what comes next.

GIVE 8/28 CAMPAIGN

Help Us Raise $25,000 for the East Baltimore Project

From Vacant Lot → Community Asset → Housing Possibility.

This Give 8/28, Smalltimore Homes is raising $25,000 toward the transformation of a vacant East Baltimore lot into a Tiny Home Demonstration + Community Education Site.

Our larger project goal is approximately $50,000, making Give 8/28 an opportunity for the community to help us raise the first half! We envision transforming an empty, overgrown former pool lot into a safe, beautiful and functional community space featuring a 20' × 8' tiny home on wheels. The tiny home was designed in 2018 and is too small to serve as permanent housing. Instead, it will become a living classroom where residents, housing providers, developers, students, volunteers, funders and community partners can experience an alternative housing model firsthand.

The project will include site clearing and preparation, improved fencing and security, a large access gate for the tiny home, landscaping, drainage and stabilization, and delivery and placement of the home.

Once activated, The Living Classroom can host:

• Tiny-home demonstrations and community tours
• Affordable-housing conversations
• Financial literacy and homeownership workshops
• Volunteer and community-building activities
• Housing-provider and developer education
• Resident-led research and community conversations
• Workshops about sustainable and innovative housing
• Partner events and demonstrations
• Conversations about what Baltimore's future housing solutions could look like

Our Give 8/28 Goal: $25,000

Your gift helps us turn an underused East Baltimore property into a visible demonstration of possibility.

• $28 helps purchase supplies for community activation and education.
• $128 supports cleanup, landscaping and site improvements.
• $280 helps support community workshops and engagement.
• $528 helps prepare the property for public demonstrations.
• $1,028+ helps fund major site, fencing, infrastructure and tiny-home activation expenses.

Every contribution moves us closer to opening the gate.

WHY HOUSING IS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE

Where we live affects how we live—and how well we are able to live. Housing is one of the most important social determinants of health. Stable, safe and affordable housing affects our ability to sleep, manage chronic conditions, prepare healthy meals, recover from illness, maintain employment, attend school, care for children, age safely, build wealth and remain connected to community. Housing instability can touch nearly every part of someone's life. That is why Smalltimore Homes does not approach homelessness as simply a question of constructing houses.

We ask: What does someone need to become—and remain—housing stable?

And then we listen.

LISTENING BEFORE BUILDING

Help Us Build the Community Resource Hub.  Our work is informed by residents, people with lived experience, housing providers and community partners. Through our community research and engagement, we continue hearing about needs that exist long before someone receives the keys to a home.

People need information. People need somewhere safe to go. People need opportunities to work. People need access to hygiene and basic resources. People need help navigating complicated systems. And people need to know who can actually help.

That feedback is helping Smalltimore Homes develop a Community Resource Hub designed to make housing and community resources easier to find and navigate.
