The RedTail Project is a Black-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen while inspiring, educating, and empowering the next generation of aviators, engineers, scientists, and leaders.
Our mission is to provide aviation-centered STEM education, mentorship, leadership development, project-management instruction, and experiential learning opportunities through the design, problem-solving, and construction of historically inspired Red Tail Mustang aircraft.
The RedTail Project is more than an aircraft build. It is a living classroom.
Through each 12–16 month cohort, students will participate in monthly virtual learning sessions with aviation professionals, engineers, historians, military leaders, project managers, and other subject matter experts. These sessions will introduce students to the skills, disciplines, and history behind complex aviation projects.
Students will learn about:
• Project management, budgeting, sourcing, and comptrollership
• Fundamentals of flight, aircraft design, engines, avionics, and aircraft systems
• Engineering problem-solving, construction, teamwork, and leadership
• The history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and the 332nd Fighter Group
• Historically inspired aircraft markings and paint schemes connected to the Red Tails of World War II
A select group of students will also have the opportunity to travel to Poland for a two-week factory-build experience, where they will gain direct exposure to aircraft construction and international aerospace operations.
Our first major fundraising milestone is raising $56,000 to secure the aircraft-kit deposit and begin the first RedTail Mustang educational build phase.
