Who We Are

The Natural Hairstyle & Braid Coalition, Inc. (NHBC) is a tax-exempt advocacy organization working to revolutionize the $11.8 billion natural hair care industry by closing critical gaps in education, training, and consumer protection.

For too long, our communities have endured hair trauma because the beauty industry — and the laws that govern it — have ignored the needs of natural/afro hair. NHBC is changing that.

We stand on Four Golden Pillars, each driving real, measurable change:

1. Health First – Elevating scalp and hair care as public health priorities by creating and promoting safety guidelines for salons nationwide.

2. Equity & Access – Removing systemic barriers so talented braiders and stylists can work legally and thrive in their careers.

3. Economic Empowerment – Providing tools, training, and mentorship that open sustainable pathways to entrepreneurship and workforce development in the beauty wellness economy.

4. Cultural Competency – Preserving and honoring the rich traditions of braiding and natural styling, while ensuring every stylist understands the cultural history of Black hair.

Vision: A world where everyone has access to safe, ethical, and sustainable hair care — regardless of hair type or texture — and where Black women’s hair health is recognized as an essential part of overall well-being.
