The Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center (LaFHAC) is a nonprofit civil rights organization established in 1995 to eradicate housing discrimination, promote housing choice, and advocate for thriving, inclusive communities. LaFHAC's work throughout Louisiana includes educational offerings, free legal services for victims of housing discrimination and people facing eviction, policy advocacy, and foreclosure prevention counseling. LaFHAC is dedicated to fighting discrimination because it is an illegal and divisive force that perpetuates poverty and segregation, and limits access to opportunity.

This GiveNOLA Day we’re raising critical funds for our Client Assistance Fund—a flexible emergency resource that helps families overcome immediate barriers to safe, stable housing.

While fair housing laws provide essential protections, the process of pursuing a complaint or securing alternative housing often creates immediate financial burdens that, if unmet, prevent clients from moving forward. This flexible, targeted fund allows our organization to remove those barriers in real time.

When someone experiences housing discrimination or faces eviction, it can have lasting impacts. It can mean losing an apartment, paying new application fees, finding emergency lodging, or scrambling for transportation.

Our Client Assistance Fund helps cover urgent, one-time needs like:
• Rental application fees
• Utility deposits
• Temporary lodging
• Transportation to court
• Moving expenses after displacement

These are often the small but critical costs that determine whether someone can stay housed, secure a new home, or pursue justice.

A gift today can make immediate impact:
$50 helps cover a housing application fee
$100 helps provide transportation and childcare for court dates
$250 helps with utility deposits or emergency relocation costs
$500 helps stabilize a family facing displacement secure temporary lodging.

Fair housing rights only matter if people can access them.

Testimonials

"I became involved with LaFHAC as a tester, and it opened my eyes firsthand to the types of discrimination people face when it comes to housing. I went undercover and pretended to be on the market for renting an apartment, and it was disheartening that I, a black woman, was told that the apartment I was interested in was not available anymore, yet when a white tester went in to check the apartment after me, he was offered the place right on spot. It was hurtful but then I was reminded of the invaluable work LaFHAC does and why education and awareness about this issue is so important."
