The Problem

Black children deserve an education that sees them fully and meets them where they are. Too often, public schools fall short — overcrowded, underfunded, and built on methods that were never designed with Black children in mind.

A Different Approach

Montessori education is a research-backed, child-centered approach developed over 110 years ago that builds independence, confidence, and a genuine love of learning. Rather than asking children to conform to a rigid standard, it meets each child at their own pace and centers their natural curiosity and strengths.

The Gap

Despite its proven effectiveness, Black children and families face significant financial and systemic barriers to accessing Montessori education. Black educators remain vastly underrepresented in the field, and the path to Montessori certification is costly and out of reach for many.

What the BMEF Does

The Black Montessori Education Fund works to close that gap. We fund scholarships, support Black-led programs, and invest in the training and development of Black Montessori educators across the United States and the African diaspora.

Why Your Support Matters

Here is what your contribution makes possible:

  • $50 puts Montessori books in the hands of an educator who couldn't otherwise afford them.
  • $100 helps cover application and testing fees for a Black educator pursuing Montessori certification.
  • $250 supports a Black-led program in purchasing the materials it needs to serve its community well.
  • $500 supports a teacher training scholarship, investing directly in a Black educator's path to certification.
  • $1,000 funds a child tuition scholarship, ensuring a Black family can access a Montessori environment that fully sees and supports their child.

Every contribution moves this work forward.
