Black Mental Health Village is more than an organization; we are a movement. Rooted in the resilience and wisdom of the Black community, we are dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers to mental wellness across Tennessee. We believe mental health is racial justice, and healing is collective.

Our Power: The Village Rises

We act as the backbone of a powerful Health Justice Coalition, uniting over 20 organizational partners across Middle Tennessee (including leaders in healthcare, advocacy, and community service). Together, we embody the African proverb: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." This coalition allows us to:

  • Amplify Culturally-Specific Care: Championing and connecting communities to resources grounded in Black cultural understanding and healing traditions (Sankofa!).

  • Drive Systemic Change: Advocating for policies that address the root causes of mental health disparities impacting Black Tennesseans.

  • Build Collective Capacity: Providing training, workshops, and healing circles that empower individuals and organizations within the Black community.

  • Foster Radical Healing Spaces: Creating safe, affirming environments for dialogue, support, and liberation.

Impact Forged by Dedication & Partnership

Fueled by a small but fiercely dedicated team (1 full-time, 2 part-time, 2 contract workers) and the strength of our coalition, BMHV achieves profound impact. We are efficient stewards, ensuring every dollar directly supports:

  • Coalition coordination & advocacy efforts.

  • Culturally-rooted mental health programs & resources.

  • Community mobilization & empowerment initiatives.
