ABOUT US
The mission of the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) is to own and operate a home for the arts, storytelling, learning and exchange around the African American experience and the rich culture of the African diaspora. We are guided by the enduring truths and essential values evident in the work of August Wilson.

The AWAACC is one of the largest Black multi-disciplinary arts centers in the United States and is the gateway to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Cultural District. Our programs include visual art exhibitions, live performances (music, dance, theater), film screenings, literary series, culinary events, education, and community engagement. Our permanent exhibition, August Wilson: The Writer’s Landscape is the first of its kind dedicated to life and work of August Wilson. We are proud to provide a platform for both established and emerging artists of color whose work reflects the universal issues of identity that Wilson tackled, and which still resonate today.

Each year, we welcome more than 100,000 local and national visitors. More than half of our programs offer free or affordable admission, to support broad participation and accessibility. By presenting and supporting work that spans the breadth of Black creativity and artistic expression, we are able to reach the broadest possible audience, offering everyone who comes through our Center’s doors – or attends an AWAACC event off-site – an experience that will resonate with their interests and meet them where they are, while opening the door to new cultural engagement.

In 2025, the August Wilson Center celebrates the 15th Anniversary of the opening of its iconic building.
