The Safe Sisters Circle

SUPPORTING AND HEALING BLACK WOMEN SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Welcome to The Safe Sisters Circle, we are a Black-woman founded and led nonprofit that provides free culturally specific, holistic, and trauma-based services to Black women and girl survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault living in Washington, DC. We focus many of our efforts on the East of the River Community (Wards 7 and 8) which have been often overlooked and underserved. 

What We Do

1. Legal Representation: We ensure survivors have access to an attorney when engaging with the legal system through full legal representation; brief advice and counsel; assistance with court filings; and advocacy in protection order, family law, and crime victim's rights matters.
2. Mental Health Support: We create a space for survivors to heal and process through short-term counseling and mental health support.  
3. Advocacy and Education: We work tirelessly to raise awareness about the issues facing Black survivors and advocate for policies that promote equality and justice. We also offer workshops for survivors on their rights within the legal system. 
4. Case Management and Wrap-Around Support: We know that the direct services we provide are often just the tip of the iceberg for survivors. We work with survivors to get directly connected with other resources they may need, provide emergency mutual aid, and cover basic needs when available. 

The Importance of Your Support

Black survivors face unique challenges that are often overlooked by other service providers who take a one-size fits all approach. The Safe Sisters Circle is one of the few organizations that was made by Black women, for Black women with a goal to provide culturally-specific, direct services to Black survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. By focusing on the needs of Black women, we provide targeted support that makes a real difference in their lives. However, for every survivor we help, there are more survivors we cannot support because of our limited resources and capacity.

• $25 — Community Support:  For $25, help fund a preventative workshop, reaching survivors and community members before crisis hits and working to change the narrative within our community to end the cycles of violence.
• $50 — Healing & Wellness: For $50, support a survivor's healing circle session, opening space for community-centered care and connection as she begins to write her next chapter.
• $100 — Justice & Safety: For $100, support a Monthly Brief Advice Clinic session, giving a survivor real legal guidance and clarity as she takes her next steps forward.
• $150 — Wrap Around Support: For $150, connect a survivor to TSSC's Resource Fair, linking her to the full range of services with community resource navigation, wellness centered activities, and Know Your Rights and advocacy workshops.
• $500 — Systems Change: For $500, fuel the community training, advocacy, and research that shift systems, so the next survivor who walks through our doors starts her chapter on stronger ground.
